Bay\u2019s \u2018A\u2019 grade on water quality misleading, clean water advocates say<\/h3>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s kind of misleading to label water quality an \u2018A,\u2019 \u201d said Brian Zabcik, clean water advocate for Environment Texas<\/a>, after reviewing the [Galveston Bay] report<\/a>. \u201cBut it\u2019s a very narrow definition of water quality.\u201d<\/p>\n

So narrow, in fact, that Erin Kinney, a [Houston Advanced Research Center]<\/a> research scientist, said researchers didn\u2019t take into account any chemical spills in the water.<\/p>\n

The levels of dissolved oxygen and nitrogen in water samples from rivers, bayous and the bay \u201cwere most often at acceptable levels for supporting diverse and healthy aquatic life,\u201d the report stated. \u201cThe water quality problems that did exist \u2014 relating to high levels of phosphorus \u2014 typically occur in bayous that receive runoff and wastewater from human activity in residential, industrial, commercial, and agricultural areas.\u201d<\/p>\n
